- Market Surveillance Leader and Market Conduct Specialist Chris Cotterell is a market surveillance leader and former proprietary trader with more than 25 years in financial markets. He combines hands-on trading experience with deep regulatory and investigative expertise, a mix that lets him design surveillance controls that work in practice, not just on paper. Chris began his career managing equity derivatives books for investment banks, structured derivatives products design and pension fund consulting. He then crossed to the regulator’s side of the market as a Senior Specialist in ASIC’s Market Surveillance team. There he led the assessment of complex market misconduct matters and helped design ASIC’s FAST surveillance programme. Chris has built surveillance capabilities from the ground up at ANZ (Global Head of Market Surveillance) and Barrenjoey. He moved to Hong Kong as Head of APAC Market Surveillance at JPMorgan, where he led a regional team across all the major APAC jurisdictions. Most recently, he was Founding Principal and Head of Market Surveillance, Testing and Monitoring at Barrenjoey, where he built three second-line programs covering trade and electronic communications surveillance, position monitoring and compliance assurance testing. Chris’s recent focus at Barrenjoey was applying AI to surveillance, including building in-house tools and apps with Anthropic’s Claude to automate surveillance processes. At XLod Singapore, he will share practical insights from this experience.
